Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) provides scalable computing capacity. Using EC2 eliminates your need to invest in hardware up front. You can use EC2 to launch as many or as few virtual machines as you need, configure security and networking, and manage storage. EC2 enables you to scale up or down to handle changes in requirements, reducing your need to forecast traffic. Users can run Lumerical design simulations on EC2. Compatibility of Lumerical’s products with EC2 provides quick, accessible, cost-effective and scalable computing infrastructure to perform ever-larger volumes of simulations to design and optimize next-generation optoelectronic components, circuits and systems.

Lumerical on Amazon EC2

You can run simulations on AWS by using either of the two methods:

Manual method

oYou can create and configure EC2 instance using the AWS administration console.  

oFor more details on the process please refer to the next section: Creating EC2 instance.

oRefer to the section: Advanced EC2 configuration for information on:
eg. connecting between instances or creating instances from your own image (AMI).

Assisted method  

oYou can easily configure, launch EC2 instance and run simulation jobs using our Python module.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) account

An AWS account is required to create your compute instances and run simulation jobs on AWS-EC2.

Create an Amazon Web Services account.

You will be asked to provide Credit Card information, which will be used to bill you later for charges when using your EC2 instances.

Please follow the wizard when creating your AWS account.

Product licensing considerations

Install and activate FlexNet license manager on your EC2 instance using a Floating MAC locked license. This is the fastest way of deploying your instances to run our design simulations.

But the following considerations are important to keep in mind:

Floating MAC locked licenses are recommended so that you can change instance type as needed without affecting your license

However, when using MAC locked licenses, it is very important to ensure that your MAC address of your EC2 Instance's Network Interface, is not released when you terminate your instance. Once the Network Interface is released, you can't get the same MAC address again and your license will stop working.

Although Trusted Storage licenses can be used on cloud compute services, we do not recommend this type.

FDTD Cloud pack license

Designed for cloud based licenses with flexible activation periods. The Cloud pack license is based on the Floating MAC locked license model and each pack can be activated on different dates within the license validity period. Each activated Cloud pack license is valid for the next 30 days. This license package is ideal for use with the Lumerical AWS integration python module.

Cloud pack license activation

Please email the following information to

License activation code, found on the license information provided by Lumerical.

MAC address of the machine running FlexNet license manager.

Your desired start date.

The cloud pack will be good to use for the next 30 days from your desired start date.
