Floating Triad Redundant

Scroll Prev Top Next More

The Floating Triad Redundant license model is appropriate for large installations that wish to ensure high availability of licenses by running 3 license servers in a special redundant configuration.  In this configuration, licenses can be accessed even if one license server fails. However, if two servers fail, licenses can not be accessed. Due to the complexity of this model, it is only recommended for large institutions with prior experience running triad redundant Flex license servers.

In a redundant configuration, the Primary server will act as the license server if at least one other server is running properly.  If the Primary server fails, but the other two machines are running properly, then the Secondary server take over as the license server.  When connecting to a triad license server, Lumerical's software first attempts to connect to the Primary server. If the software does not receive a response, it will contact the Secondary server.

Administrator access is required.

Floating licenses allow users to access their licenses on any computer in the network.

The Triad configuration provides redundancy if the primary license server fails.

This license model uses a file (.lic) base license.  These licenses are locked to the 3 computers forming the triad redundant servers.

This license model is appropriate for large institutions with experience running redundant license servers.

The three license servers should be on the same local network and should be running the same OS.

License is activated offline.

sudo sh ./

sudo yum install <Lumerical_FlexNert_installation file>.rpm

If you don't have yum installed, you can use the following:

4.Once the installation has completed, remove the default license file (start.lic) that comes with the install package to set up your License Manager for Redundant Triad

sudo rm /opt/lumerical/lumerical-flexlm/licenses/LUMERICL/start.lic

Mac OS

3.Once the installation has completed, remove the default license file (start.lic) that comes with the install package to set up your License Manager for Redundant Triad

sudo rm /opt/lumerical/lumerical-flexlm/licenses/LUMERICL/start.lic

Installing the license file (Done Offline)

Step 1: Modify license file

Once the License Manager has been installed and setup, you should modify your license file with the appropriate information.

The following information are required to be specified on your license file:

The host names of your three license servers

The port number of your lmadmin (the default is 27011)

The decision of which license server will be the primary, secondary, and tertiary server

On the heading of your license file, you will see the following information:

#Please Do not delete this comment line.

SERVER this_host 0060dd469ca8

SERVER this_host2 000c290a498c

SERVER this_host3 001CC0F3684F

At minimum, you need to add the following:

The first SERVER line will become your primary server (Master), then the second and third SERVER line will become your secondary and tertiary server respectively

Modify each "host" information with the HostName of your license servers. Ensure that the host name is paired with the respective MAC address

Add the license manager port number (the default is 27011)

Include LUMERICL daemon port number (default is 42128)

#Please Do not delete this comment line.

SERVER PANORAMA 000c290a498c 27011

Other parameter that you can enter is PRIMARY_IS_MASTER. This parameter is optional and should be placed on the first SERVER line

The PRIMARY_IS_MASTER keyword is a feature for FlexNet Licensing that ensures that the primary server is the Master whenever it is running and communicating with one of the other license servers.

If this is set and the primary server goes down, when the primary server comes back up again, it will always become the master.

If this is not set and the primary server goes down, the secondary server becomes the master and remains the master even when the primary server comes back up. The primary can only become the master again when the secondary license server fails.

Step 2: Importing the license file

Install the license file, as explained below, on all three computers in the triad.

Using the FlexNet license manager dashboard

1.This process is done on the computer where the license manager is installed.

2.Go to the Vendor Daemon Configuration on your FlexNet Publisher Dashboard, or by simply visiting the following link: http://localhost:8095/vendor

3.You will be asked to Sign In with an administrator user name and password, which are both set to 'admin' by default.

4.Click the Import License button

FlexNet Publisher

5.Then, click Choose File / Browse and located the license file that you have received from us.

6.Click the Import License button If the update is successful, you will see messages in green that notify you that the update has been done successfully.

7.You will be required to restart your Lumerical Flex License Manager for the changes to take effect. Please see the Restart License Manager on how to do this.

8.You can verify the status of your licenses by opening the FlexNet publisher dashboard.

Note: If your new license is a license extension or renewal of your previous license that is still valid, your new license will not be available right away. Once your existing license expire, then the new license will show on the dashboard and be available for checkout after you have done the above steps.

One of the common error that you may encounter is the message: "License file exists. Cannot overwrite an existing file, licenses/LUMERICL/LicenseFile.lic, unless overwrite option is enabled"

When this happens, it means that you have license file with the same file name in the same location. Please verify whether the previous license is still valid or not.

If the previous license is still valid: You must rename your new license to a unique name. Please only use alphabets and numbers for the file name (e.g. LicenseFile2013.lic)

If the previous license has expired: You can manually remove them, or alternatively during the import process, select "Overwrite License File on License Server" to overwrite your previous license file.

Linux command line installation

To install the license file from the command line in Linux, please see the following instructions.

oOpen the terminal

oCopy the license file that you received and put it in the "licenses" folder

sudo cp /home/lumerical/Desktop/LicenseFile.lic /opt/lumerical/lumerical-flexlm/licenses/LUMERICL/

oChange owner of the license file to lumlmadmin so that the license manager is able to access it

sudo chown lumlmadmin /opt/lumerical/lumerical-flexlm/licenses/LUMERICL/LicenseFile.lic

oRestart your license manager so the changes could take effects

oPlease see the the Restart License Manager section to restart the Lumerical FlexNet License Manager

Transferring the license

Triad redundant licenses can not be transferred to other computers. Please visit the Support Center for instructions to contact Lumerical technical support for assistance.

Common issues

Connecting to a non-Master License Server

When running triad redundant servers, you must connect to the Primary server.  If you connect to a license server that is not the Primary to view the license status, you see the error message shown below. In this example the computer's name is 'SKY'.

FlexNet Publisher

Error: You have connected to a license server that is configured for three server redundancy and is not the Master...
